i lead a team of engineers and scientists at Bell Labs and brought up and put into operation a Billion dollar semiconductor wafer fab. the group before me tried for two years and failed, i had it up and running in 9 months with high yield, first lot i ran through the fab (98%) after i had the team set all the process parameters correctly had 98 percent yield which was unheard off in that technology
I improved package yield also so that our package yield went up to 98% as well, we became the most profitable SBU in AT&T having been losing money before i made the changes
Our GaAs yield was running between 0% to 50% due to high intra and inter wafer process variation. it was very expensive, we lost money basically packaging up marginally bad material. our yield was between 0 and 50 % and i told them i could fix it and they said no, you can't, we tried for years. and so i studied it and fixed it. i used Neural Networks to model data that could not be otherwise modeled. i deployed without telling them since they told me not to do it. Our package yield went up to 98 percent and our unit went from the worst to the most profitable, we returned $250 million dollars on $500 million dollars in sales, that went higher after i fixed the wafer yield in the new foundry.
