My overarching goal is to help people understand their language-based data via a combination of natural language processing and information visualization.

The three challenges of language data:

• Find information in it
• Make sense of that information
• Communicate the results

The three step solution:

• Analyze language data with natural language processing (NLP) to help extract information
• Visualize the information interactively to make sense of it
• Combine the visualizations with language to convey the new insights

With a background in linguistics and computer science, I not only understand the kinds of issues that language data presents, but I also have the skills to develop tools that improve people's work capabilities. Many of those tools are freely available from my website. Crucially, I work together with domain experts to explore their specific needs in order to come up with analyses and visualizations that address those needs. More broadly, I act as a bridge between different groups, fostering new collaborations and improved relations among people with different interests and concerns.
